Co-ordination and close cooperation with other JSRs, particularly MIDP-NG (118), Gaming API for CDC (134), J2ME Platform spec (JSR68) and  must be carried out to avoid unnecessary duplication and fragmentation. Perhaps adoption of MIDP-NG base audio and a yet to be defined base audio capability in CDC (done in PDAP -JSR75?) devices should be specified by this JSR as pre-existing. Careful adoption of existing standards for multimedia streaming and control should be done, versus starting from scratch.

This JSR highlights where a J2ME 'architecture board' or the J2ME Platform spec (JSR68) building blocks group would be of benefit. Ultimately some group needs take responsibility for sorting out "what goes where" for J2ME in general or perhaps specialist groups in the two configurations (CDC and CLDC).

Although the title refers to Multimedia, the focus of this JSR appears to be high capability audio, which extends the audio capabilities being added within MIDP_NG (JSR118). This would appear to cause a problem if this high end audio API were added to a CDC/non-MIDP_NG implementation, where the base audio capabilities of MIDP_NG are not present. I would encourage the expert group for JSR135 to focus on a solution for only one configuration, not both.

This JSR appears too narrow in scope, and needs to take into consideration embedded device applications beyond handheld consumer entertainment. 

The JSR is unclear about content beyond audio, and should be specific about which multimedia it intends to embrace. 

The JSR is unclear about the extent to which it will address multimedia device command and control. There exists a long history of existing standards work that directly applies to the use of embedded systems in both consumer and professional media industries. Specifically, this JSR should indicate if it addresses command and control of multimedia device resources within set-top boxes, vehicle entertainment systems controlled from central telematics processors and professional audio and video systems used in media development and event production. 

Standards in this area should include smart handheld devices that can work with audio, streaming video and file based video at all sampling resolutions and aspect ratios. 

International standards bodies have already defined command and control standards for multimedia devices. This JSR should specifically collaborate with and harmonize to related standards created by the Audio Engineering Society (www.aes.org) and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (www.smtpe.org).
